08/24/2010 3:34 AM My husband and I are from Mobile and we eat at the Brick Pit every time we come home to visit. It's right up there with raw oysters and REAL seafood as a food crave I MUST satisfy before leaving the city. I really don't think that there is anywhere else in the world that can rival the Brick Pit's Bar-B-Que! Keep making us proud. We love ya'll and miss you more than you'll ever know! Lisa and Kevin Granade Milwaukee, WI 07/19/2010 8:30 AM I've found heaven on earth. If you like BBQ, this is where it's done RIGHT. The old fashion way - LOW AND SLOW. If you're going anywhere near Mobile, AL, this is a must stop. Scott Smith Englewood, FL 07/15/2010 1:01 PM We wanted to try real Southern barbeque and the Brick Pit was perfect! The pork sandwich was delicious with the slightly tangy, spicy sauce and the distinct smokey flavor of the pork. The banana pudding was phenomenal! Most of all, customer service was excellent, to the waitstaff and the owner who were all extremely friendly and attentive. The owner was very kind and courteous and made our experience there even greater by taking the time to talk to us. We will certainly eat here again the next time we come down to Mobile! Brick Pit Webmaster Brick Pit Webmaster Mobile Alabama 05/05/2008 7:29 AM In 1999 The Brick Pit was a big inspiration in bringing Southern style BBQ to Holland. Almost 10 years later we operate our own BBQ catering business. Thank U guys for getting us started Mike Eindhoven NL 04/29/2008 6:34 AM I have to admit, I am now convinced that there is no comparison to Southern BBQ. I had no idea walking into the place how good the food can be, but walked out wanting more. We need you to open up some establishments in the NY/NJ area. Cheers! Chris Somerset, NJ 04/23/2008 7:10 AM Your BBQ stands alone. I only get back to Mobile once a year now that I am working in the Netherlands, but each journey home is that much sweeter sitting over a plate full of pulled pork and sweet tea. I have to stop. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. See you in early June! Jason the Netherlands 02/29/2008 12:38 PM I brought my son Cooper to the Pit last year and we loved it! Same geat food, as it was when I was there in '94. Thanks Bill! Great memories from a former Bayshark! The Brick Pit is the best! Gerald Patterson Dothan, AL 01/06/2008 2:15 AM I have been a Chef int the Mobile area for some fourteen years, and own a restaurant a mile away from the Brick Pit. I have a great rib story related to memphis in may 2007. vona memphis, tn 06/15/2007 3:08 AM Located on Old Shell Road, west of 65, the Brick Pit has been serving quality BBQ for 4 decades. The rustic, but friendly d←cor inside welcomes you to a place where you can tell things are simple and tasty. The pulled pork plate is an ample amount of food for the hungry diner and includes your choice of regular or spicy BBQ sauce, a thick piece of Texas toast, and a choice of two side items. The chunks and strings of pork meat are succulent and flavorful. One can taste the effort made by pitmaster Bill Armbrecht in his large cooker behind the main building where he slow cooks all the meats at the lowest temperatures possible for plenty of time. The spicy sauce isnt what one would expect just a little more flavor and kick, not a ton of heat. The coleslaw is crunchy and fresh with a nice vinegar base and the toast is a perfect complement to soak up the leftover sauce with when your meal is almost over. The Brick Pit offers a rotating line of desserts including the highly touted banana pudding. The dining room is small and somewhat limited, but the service is quick and efficient. After paying for your meal (all major credit cards accepted), a server will usher your food and drink out to your table. While the Brick Pit does not sell alcohol, they do allow BYOB and more than a few patrons are known to hoist a cold one with their BBQ. Closed Sundays and Mondays, the Brick Pit is open until 8pm Tuesday through Thursday and until 9pm Friday and Saturday. 5456 Old Shell Road (Near University Blvd), Mobile, Alabama 36608. (5456 Old Shell Road 251 343-0001) Located under some beautiful live oaks in suburban West Mobile; slogan "It's Serious BBQ"; the lean pulled pork is the highlight; "It's not just chopped up mush" says owner Bill Armbrecht, who is damn proud of his product; slow cooked over a blend of hickory and pecan for up to 30 hours to create a nice smoky flavor; the chicken and ribs are also above average; Mama Dot's tangy BBQ sauce is outstanding; the recipe is a family secret; everything here is homemade except the sourdough, Texas-style bread served with each entree; the fresh, crispy cole slaw is superb and the baked beans taste great with a little Mama Dot's sauce mixed in; BBQ pork and chicken sandwiches are available in two sizes (regular and a smaller "Brick Bite"); wash it all down with a expertly brewed sweet tea with lemon, Coke or an ice cold longneck Budweiser; dessert specials change weekly; you may get lucky and hit them when they're offering Banana Pudding; a shady swing awaits out back following your meal; owner Bill Armbrecht is a huge Crimson Tide fan; a portrait of Bear Bryant hangs on the wall ... as does a huge sailfish (Armbrecht is an avid sportsman); Bill claims he opened the Brick Pit because he "got tired of not being able to go out and get really good smoked BBQ in Mobile"; patrons have left a variety of wacky messages in red marker all over the walls inside the restaurant; open for lunch and dinner Tuesday - Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday; the "This Ain't No Dream ... This is the Real Thing" sign out front is a tongue in cheek poke at the famous Dreamland BBQ company, which has moved into the Mobile market; the competition hasn't prevented the Brick Pit from being voted Best BBQ in Mobile for 3 years running; this is indeed "Serious BBQ" prepared with passion and attention to detail; highly recommended!
